Screen, window, area and device

What to record sits in the middle of the bar. When you have more than one display or more than one window open, a picker appears next to the mode so you can choose which.

Screen

Records a whole display. It is the safest mode for tutorials where you switch apps midway, because nothing leaves the frame when you change windows. With two monitors, pick which one in the selector next to it.

Window

Records one specific window. Notifications and other apps passing over it never make it into the video. Choose the window in the picker before hitting record: without one selected, the button tells you what is missing.

Area

You drag a rectangle on screen and only that gets recorded. Good for framing part of an interface without resizing the window. Esc cancels the selection.

Device: iPhone and iPad

Plug an iPhone or iPad into the cable, pick Device on the bar, and record. The screen comes straight from the device, at its own resolution: nothing shows on the Mac and nothing has to be installed on the phone. You use the device itself, with your finger, exactly as you normally would, and the recording runs on its own.

The webcam keeps recording alongside, on its own track. When you stop, the video opens in the editor already assembled: the device screen correctly framed in portrait, with your image beside it, ready to be repositioned or moved to another layout.

1. Plug the device into the cableAn iPhone or iPad, on the cable it shipped with. Unlock the screen and, if the device asks, trust this computer.
2. Pick Device on the barThe picker next to it shows what is connected. With more than one device on a cable, choose which one.
3. Record from the deviceHit record and go to the phone. Scrolling, taps and transitions keep the fluidity of the device, with no mirroring in between.
4. Stop and editOnce stopped, the video opens in the editor already formatted. The Video module also offers the device frame, which wraps the captured screen in the phone body.
